Chicago was first brought to life in 1975 and was later revived by Broadway in 1996. Since then, the Broadway musical production has received several awards. They won a total of 6 Tony Awards for “Best Revival of a Musical,” “Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical,” “Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical,” “Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical,” “Best Direction of a Musical,” “Best Choreography,” and “Best Lighting Design.” The production also received two Olivier Awards for “Outstanding Musical Production” and “Best Actress in a Musical.” Finally, they were awarded the Grammy Awards with “Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.”
The New York Times wrote about Chicago and said, “This Chicago impressed me far more than the original… Make love to the audience was another Fosse dictum. That’s exactly what Ms. Reinking and her ensemble do. Chicago can still seem glibly cynical and artificially cold, especially in its weaker second act. But these performers know just how to take off the chill.”
Chicago starts off with the story of Roxie Hartt, set in the razzle-dazzle of the 1920s. She is a housewife and a nightclub dancer who murders her side lover after an altercation as he breaks off an affair with her. In a desperate attempt to avoid conviction, she hires Chicago’s best criminal lawyer. Together, they dupe the public, the media, and Roxie’s rival cellmate, Velma Kelly. The two women fight to get sympathy from the public as they rival to make tabloid headlines.
All the drama paired with glamorous productions and jazz tunes makes Chicago the best-selling Broadway production, with almost 11,000 shows played since it was revived in 1996. Truly, Chicago is a class act that everyone cannot get enough of.
