The Broadway production Chicago has run since 1996. On stage, the orchestra takes the center. The show’s hot, jazzy music is the real star of this production – alongside the outstanding performances of the cast. The secret to this musical’s record-breaking success lies largely in the music by John Kander and Fred Ebb. The bold and seductive sound conveys a fatal flaw in human nature: how easily we allow the razzle-dazzle to deceive us.
Set in the glitz and glam of the 1920s, Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover as he threatens to leave her. She dupes the public, the media, and her rival cellmate (Velma Kelly) in a desperate attempt to avoid conviction. Roxie employs Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to turn her heinous act into a bombardment of sensational headlines that might easily be lifted from today’s tabloids.
Just recently, Chicago cast a new Roxie, which will not be played by the “Cruel Summer” star Olivia Holt. “When I was a kid, I performed in theater camps in my hometown and loved it. I loved the immediate reaction from the audience,” she said in an interview.
The current cast of Chicago features Olivia Holt as Roxie Hart, Kimberly Marable as Velma Kelly, Erich Bergen as Billy Flynn, Charity Angél Dawson as Matron “Mama” Morton, Liam Fennecken as Amos Hart and R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine.
