This 2023/2203, opera music lovers can expect nothing but the best performances from Dallas Opera! The extraordinary line-up comprises some of the most sought-after productions. Dramatic operas are given a stunning approach as the creative team pulls out all the stops to deliver top-notched quality and music! This season Dallas Opera will be delivering the world premiere of award-winning composer Joby Talbot and critically-acclaimed songwriter Gene Scheer. This is the same tandem that brought the award-winning one-act opera Everest to the Winspear Opera House in 2015!

“Dallas Opera brings out the comedy and emotional depth of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte” – Texas Classic Review.

“It’s got all the elements of a movie thriller: greed, theft, fraud, murder, and incest, as well as true love” – The Dallas Morning News on Das Rheingold

The season also includes an electrifying showcase of Tosca, a timeless three-act piece from the legendary composer Giacomo Puccini. This work of art, which premiered over a century ago, is a melodramatic piece that took place in 1800s Rome. The story comprised the Kingdom of Naples and Rome and the French revolutionary war. Speaking of classic masterpieces, the Dallas Opera will also be lighting up the Winspear Opera House with another century-old classic, Elektra. The one-act piece composed by Richard Strauss embodies ancient Greek Mythology and is partially based on the Greek tragedy Electra by Sophocles. When Elektra premiered in 1909 in Germany, the opera drama was ahead of its time and was regarded as expressionist and highly modernist. This season, modern opera enthusiasts will have the pleasure of seeing these legendary masterpieces as Dallas Opera revives them to the best of their abilities. And when we say that America’s top opera house will do its best, these shows are guaranteed to leave the audience speechless.

Besides century-old performances, the Dallas Opera will also be delivering an opera adaption of the 2007 film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. For romance lovers, they can bask in the greatest love story of all time. Romeo and Juliet is a five-act classic that features the music of legendary French composer Charles Gounod. It first premiered in 1867 and is absolutely an exquisite piece of history that you can experience! To be able to see a performance that have captivated music lovers over 150 years ago can be surreal. Luckily, music director Villaume has an excellent tenure in reviving these timeless pieces into the modern era.

The accomplished French conductor wowed American audience in 1990 with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and has since developed a stark reputation on U.S. shores. He first performed for the Dallas Opera in 1998 and then came in as music director in 2015. Villaume’s impressive career has delivered numerous magnificent performances in North America. He has done exemplary work with the Dallas Opera, Montreal Symphony, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra De Paris, and Slovenian Philharmonic. This 2023-2024 season, the amazing line-up performances are somewhat a testament to his vast experience and brilliant curation. Director Villaume will work hand-in-hand with Dallas Opera Orchestra and Chorus. The opera will also be bringing principal guest conductor and internationally-renowned artistic director Nicole Paiement.

The Dallas Opera performed its first showcase in 1957. Since its inception, the production has brought numerous international performers, such as Dame Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballe, Placido Domingo, Jon Vickers, and many more. Aside from singers, Dallas Opera is also known to procure creative and artistic talents such as guest directors. Delivering over six decades of excellence, the Dallas Opera continues to create a significant impact on the music industry. The company’s commitment to outstanding performance has made Dallas a center for world-class opera. Besides grand premiers and breathtaking revivals, the opera also has a deep commitment to community engagement, artistic collaborations, audience development, and technological enhancements.

The Dallas Opera’s home, Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House is prepped and ready for another fruitful season. The stage is specially built to host ballet and other types of dance performances. Boasting impressive architecture by Pritzker award-winning architects, the Winspear Opera House is the archetype of modern opera. Located in downtown Dallas, Texas, the state-of-the-art venue is a $42 million project boasting top-tier entertainment facilities and trail-blazing light and sound technology.
